Closing in on 10,000 AppExchange ISV listings, standing out is both essential and challenging. As a Salesforce alumni who’s now the AppExchange Whisperer, I’ve worked with many partners to enhance their listings, improve search rankings, and ultimately drive deals.
Here’s a small piece of my proven approach to mastering AppExchange optimization, covering key insights to rank higher and convert visits into deals.
Four pillars form the foundation influencing AppExchange rankings:
Keywords
Engagement
Experience
Learning
These pillars shape how listings are scored and determine what position it appears in searches. Breakdown of each along with recommendations:
Keywords are essential for visibility, but they’re often misunderstood. Many partners fall into the trap of keyword stuffing, thinking more is better. Keyword stuffing will catch up with you in the last pillar. AppExchange’s algorithm favors listings that provide clear, value-focused messaging.
Use Precise Keywords: Avoid general buzzwords. Instead, focus on what you actually sell. For example, my AppExchange Keyword Service not only guarantees top 5 positions, it helps partners pinpoint effective, high-ranking terms while avoiding common pitfalls.
Align with Customer Expectations: Keywords should reflect what current customers purchase. A concise, accurate representation of the main go-to-market (GTM) is important to ranking success.
Choose the Right Category: While categories don’t directly impact search ranking, they do improve user experience by helping potential customers find you. Choose categories that align with functionality to improve discoverability.
Most interactions — from clicks on resources to demo views — contribute to search algorithm score. Some tips to maximize engagement:
Enable Every CTA: Salesforce provides great CTAs such as “Watch a Demo”, “Get It Now” & “Test Drive”. These are weighted significantly.
Optimize Visuals: Screenshots and videos are crucial but should be arranged with user experience in mind. Avoid placing a video as the first screenshot, as this forces users to click multiple times..
Increase Tile Click Rates: To boost these, make sure the Tile Image is not just a logo and communicates what the listing provides. Information when hovering should be clear and action-oriented.
AppExchange values listings that demonstrate credibility and quality. A couple ways to build this experience are badges & reviews:
Relevant Badges: Badges enhance credibility and improve algorithm score. Check package details in your partner portal for available badges, and if any are missing, file a support ticket.
Legitimate Reviews: Reviews help build trust and are one of the many factors used for ranking. After clients experience measurable results, ask them for feedback. A few high-quality reviews from real Trailblazer Profiles have more impact than a large quantity of less detailed ones. Many of my clients are in the top 3 (if not #1) position over larger partners who have far more reviews.
The “Learning” pillar is Salesforce’s way of integrating AI and machine learning. While specifics are not disclosed, modern search algorithms reward strong fundamentals — clear messaging, high-quality engagement, and consistent updates.
Generating leads from your AppExchange listing goes beyond mere visibility. Here’s how to turn clicks into conversions:
Avoid Wasteful Advertising: Many partners invest heavily in digital ads that drive traffic but not conversions. I focus on targeted optimizations that have shown results, such as a 93% YoY increase in leads and a 278% increase in “Get It Now” clicks for example.
Targeted Messaging: Focusing on core value and ideal customer profile, you attract leads that are more likely to convert, reducing time spent on unqualified prospects.
Monitoring listing performance is key to understanding what’s working and potential areas for improvement. Here’s how I approach tracking and analysis:
Interpret Key Metrics: Marketplace Analytics provide basic analytics but, pinpointing deeper insights is challenging. I regularly export & visualize data trends, making it easier to spot growth areas and refine strategies. Checkout my free AppExchange Traffic Charting tool.
Regular Updates: Update your listing with new features, recent customer success stories, or improved visuals. Regular updates signal to the algorithm that your listing remains relevant.
A regular cadence of updates is essential. Salesforce guidance is once a month while I prefer more frequent updates. Whenever you release new/improved features, secure a new customer success story, update the listing to signal freshness. Many clients outsource listing maintenance which is part of my monthly AppExchange Keyword Service.
Although categories don’t directly impact ranking, selecting the correct one (or more) improves a listing’s discoverability. Choose categories which best reflect your app’s primary function to make it easier to find.
AppExchange’s Partner Co-Marketing (formerly AppExchange Marketing Program or AMP), can drive deals. Results vary widely based on offering and maturity level of the market segment. My assessments include specific recommendations on engaging this team.
Listings are generally mobile-responsive by design. Ensure visuals, text, are clear and preview on mobile devices, as many visitors are browsing with smaller screens.
Concise, action-oriented descriptions work best. User pain points and solutions rather than feature lists. Be clear about the benefits offered making it easy understand how it stands out.
Avoiding common pitfalls can significantly improve listing performance:
Overcomplicating Messaging: Simple, direct language that reflects the main GTM strategy works best. Your listing should clearly convey whats actually selling.
Keyword Stuffing: Excessive keywords hurt more than they help, particularly when it comes to the machine learning pillar. Focus on a few targeted terms that align with customer expectations.
Missing Calls to Action: Neglecting the CTAs that Salesforce provides can reduce engagement and lead capture opportunities.
